TailWind President's Message - January 2010

January 2010

Movin’ On

After three years of Old Slow Twitch's screed from the front saddle it's time you got a break – from me at least.  It has been a distinct pleasure and honor to represent the TailWind Tandem Club and to be involved with such an enthusiastic group of cyclists.  While the club is small your dedication and interest in furthering our sport is truly superior.  It's been a real treat to see our numbers grow, to say nothing about the level of class that all the ladies from the aft saddle have added to what would otherwise be just a boring bunch of dudes who love hashing out the advantages, disadvantages and intricacies of various greasy but beautiful tandem components.

The not so well kept secret behind the success of our club is the hard work and dedication of Newsie Suzie Sisk.  Without her there wouldn't be a TailWind Tandem Club.  She's absolutely the club secretary par excellence and a great friend who is always a balanced source of advice for my sometimes off the wall thoughts and ideas.  I'd also like to thank Dolores Coughlin for her very conscientious work in scheduling and riding herd on the volunteers who worked at the Carolina Cycling tile Trial Association's meets.  Her efforts kept us among the most active clubs accruing volunteer points from the association.  In a most recent and new effort thanks to Dan Alion who has taken the lead in our efforts to help blind and visually impaired athletes participate in tandem cycling.  Lastly, a special thanks to the teams who lead and host rides throughout the year.  It's your efforts that "show the colors" of TWTC on the road and give us such neat opportunities for fun, camaraderie, and occasionally hammering as hard as some of us can.  You give the senior trikester great opportunities to be road sweep.  As for New Year's resolutions, Team Brosnan is going to get Old What's Her Name back on the twicer as her arthritis allows even if it's just for neighborhood jaunts.  Happy Holidays, God bless and ride safely!  Jay B

The King is Dead, Long Live the King

THANK YOU Jay, I know I have big shoes to fill. I just hope that I can live up to the standards you have set. I’m especially worried about writing a column every month. On the other hand, I have some wonderful ideas (O.K. they seem wonderful to me at least) that will come of age in the months to come. First let me say “Hi” to the two new teams at the Christmas party. Welcome Team Lieberman and Team Weidner. I’m pretty sure you’re not from Gaston County though. I didn’t hear anything about passport issues as you tried to cross the border into Mecklenburg. Once again WELCOME. To the other teams, we’re sorry we missed you at the party.
